What it's like, before you commit

  • Walk in cold — we'll meet you there

First session is free. No assessment fee, no sign-up commitment. Wear what you've got.

  • Max 4 to a coach

Semi-private means actual eyes on your lifts. Not a bootcamp. Not a follow-the-screen class.

  • Programs are individual

You and the person next to you are doing different work, on the same floor, at the same time.

  • Month-to-month, no contracts

Cancel any time. We win when you keep showing up — not when you forget to.

  • Adults only

Average member age is 38. Our oldest is 64. The vibe is serious, friendly, not Instagram.

  • Updated weekly via WhatsApp

Schedule, programming, and gym news pushed through the member group. The site stays current.

Who's coaching you

I started Iron Yard because I couldn't find a gym I'd send my mom to.

I’m Marcus. I played D1 football, blew out a shoulder, and spent the next three years figuring out how to get strong again without re-injuring myself. The gyms in town were either chrome-and-mirrors places that didn’t actually coach you, or echo-chamber powerlifting basements where if you weren’t already strong, you didn’t belong.

I wanted a third option — a place where a 55-year-old learning to deadlift gets the same attention as a competitive lifter. Where the coaching is honest. Where you can walk in the door not knowing what you’re doing and leave six months later knowing exactly what you’re doing.

That’s what Iron Yard is. We’re small on purpose. Twenty-five members, two coaches, 1,800 square feet. Semi-private means I see every rep you do.

If you’ve been quietly thinking about getting stronger but every gym you’ve walked into felt wrong — come see this one. The first session is free, no pitch.

What Customers Say

  • I'd quit two big-box gyms before walking in here. Two years later I deadlift 315 and I actually look forward to Tuesday mornings. Marcus coaches the human, not the lift.
  • I came in worried I'd be the slowest, oldest person in the room. Within a month half the members knew my name. Felt more like a clubhouse than a gym.
  • The online programming is the only training plan I've ever finished. It's built around my actual life — three kids, a 5am alarm, a garage with one barbell.
  • I came for a powerlifting meet prep and stayed because the coaching is honest. Marcus will tell you when your form is bad and when you're being soft. Both useful.

The questions everyone asks

  • I haven't trained in years (or ever). Am I too out of shape for this?
Probably not. About a third of our members had never touched a barbell when they walked in. The intro session is the place to find out — bring whatever you’ve got and we’ll meet you there.
  • What actually happens in the free intro session?
Sixty minutes with Marcus or Dani. We talk about what you’re after, walk through 3–4 basic movement screens, and run a short workout so you can see how we coach. No pitch at the end — just a yes/no on whether semi-private is a fit.
  • What's the catch with the no-contract pricing?
There isn’t one. Month-to-month, cancel any time, no initiation fee. We’d rather you stay because the training works than because you’re locked in.
  • How does the schedule work? It says it changes.
Our strength blocks run 6 weeks. Class times shift slightly each block based on member availability. Current block runs through June 7 — schedule below. New block published two weeks before it starts.
  • Can I do this if I live in Midlothian or Mechanicsville?
Yes — we have members commuting from both. If the drive is rough, the online programming option is built for exactly that.
  • Do you do group classes or bootcamps?
Saturday Open Strength is the only true group class — barbell-focused, drop-ins welcome. Everything else is semi-private (max 4 to a coach) or 1-on-1. No bootcamps, no HIIT, no jumping jacks.
